Your Vacation
Culture in Dubai can often seem straightforward. Wondering how to dress? Should you tip? Can you drink alcohol? Here are 10 tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience while exploring Dubai.
- Travel Between October and April
Dubai has two seasons — hot and hotter. From October to April, the city enjoys pleasant, sunny skies and perfect beach weather. Although this period is also the rainy season, showers typically don’t last long, so it shouldn’t impact your travel plans. - Look for Flights Six Months Ahead
International airlines often release their lowest fares about six months before departure. While it’s not necessary to book tickets that early, starting your search and comparing prices is a good idea. At the very latest, purchase your tickets at least one month before departure. - Book Your Hotel Months Ahead
Dubai is a popular destination, especially from October to April. To ensure you find a great place to stay, make your hotel reservation two to three months in advance, particularly during peak tourist season. - Respect Ramadan
If you’re visiting during Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, show respect for the local customs. During daylight hours, refrain from eating, drinking, or smoking in public, as Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. - Dress Modestly
When packing, opt for conservative attire over revealing or flashy outfits. Women should avoid short, tight, or transparent clothing, and men should avoid walking around shirtless. Dressing modestly will help you blend in and show respect for the local culture. - Request Permission Before Taking Photos
Always ask for permission before taking photos of people, unless you’re capturing a scenic shot in a tourist area. Never take photos of Muslim women or sensitive locations like government buildings, airports, or military sites without explicit consent. - Tipping Etiquette
Tipping is not mandatory in Dubai, but it’s a common practice. Many restaurants include a service charge, so tipping is not always necessary. Taxi drivers typically don’t expect tips, but small gratuities for luggage carriers or supermarket baggers are appreciated. - Provide Landmarks for Taxi Drivers
While taxis are a convenient and affordable way to get around Dubai, don’t assume your driver knows every street or restaurant. To ensure you reach your destination, give them references to major landmarks, as they will be more familiar with these. - Drink Alcohol Responsibly
While alcohol is legal in Dubai, consuming it in public spaces is prohibited. Public drunkenness and drinking and driving are also illegal. To purchase alcohol for personal use, you’ll need a permit, and you must buy it from licensed establishments like bars or restaurants. Don’t attempt to take alcohol with you when leaving. - Avoid Public Displays of Affection (PDA)
Public displays of affection are frowned upon and can even lead to arrest in the UAE. To avoid any legal issues, refrain from holding hands, kissing, or engaging in any other PDA while in public.
Despite some strict regulations, Dubai is a vibrant, unique destination worth experiencing. Whether traveling solo, with a partner, or with family, it’s a place that offers unforgettable experiences.
